Set the language plan

Choose the languages the child will hear, set a weekly percentage target per language for the current age band, and assign a language to each adult.

Set the language plan

Goal: a target share per language, a language per adult, and a Mandarin decision. Parents only.

Steps#

  1. Go to Settings › Languages & budget.
  2. Under Languages we use, tick the languages the child will hear.
  3. Under Budget by age band, drag one slider per language. The sliders always add up to 100. The default is Dhivehi 50, English 35, Malay 15 for ages 2 to 3. Targets are weekly, not daily.
  4. Under Who speaks what, pick the language each adult speaks to the child. The rule shown under the list: parents speak the heritage language at home always; every other adult uses their strongest language only.
  5. Under Mandarin decision, choose Defer (off the plan until age 4), Plan for 4 (added then), or Skip.
  6. Tap Save.

What the plan drives#

  • Plan › Week shows a Language forecast bar of next week's planned split against these targets, with a warning per language that is short.
  • Progress › Dashboard shows the actual split from logged blocks.
  • Each schedule block carries a language: Dhivehi, English, Malay, Owner language (whatever that block's owner speaks), or Mixed. Set it in Edit the schedule.

Variations#

  • To change targets for an older age band, set the child's date of birth correctly; the band follows the age.

FAQ

Which languages can be planned?

Dhivehi, English, Malay, Indonesian, and Mandarin. The interface itself has 19 languages; the plan is what counts hours and sets targets.

What do the warnings mean?

Two guard rails: at ages 2 to 3 the plan warns if Dhivehi is under 45 percent, and at any age it warns if a planned language is under 15 percent, the floor below which a language rarely stays productive.
